Possibilties of using fibreoptic coupled spectrometers in colour measurements

Request for information

Color measurements become more and more important in the industrial field depending on increasing quality standards. Many applications can be fulfilled with simple systems in use already. But to measure very little spots, color measurement in transmission and the integration in the production flow is often hard to realize. Nevertheless the high investment is a problem.

Our fiber optical coupled spectrometers make you able, beside mobile measurements, to measure color directly at the point of production also (inline and online). Minituarized probes and the optical connection via optical fibers makes it easy to separate the spectrometer from the point of measurement.

The compact optic, without any moving parts, makes the spectrometer very rugged, maintenance free and reliable. The optical fiber connection gives you flexibility of choice of probes, that can be changed easily depending on the application.

Also the color determination of light sources, or source/filter combinations can be realized due to the high spectral resolution of the systems.

Advantages of fiber optical coupled spectrometers in the field of color measurements
  • system is flexible in configuration
  • mobile systems
  • suitable for applications in the process due to fiber optics
  • very small spot can be detected
  • transmission measurement are possible
  • depending on the modularity of the system and probes it is very easy to configurate

Measurement of non transparent, scattering or gloss samples
Reflection measurement with d/8°-geometry
To measure with the well known diffuse/8°-geometry there is a little integrating sphere of 1.5” diameter available with an integrated halogene lightsource. The sphere has an integrated tungsten-halogenen-light source to illuminate the sample. The diameter size of the detection spot is 3 mm in the center of the hole of 10 mm diameter of the sphere. If you want to measure smaller diameters it can be adjust to 1mm diameter. With the integrated gloss trap measurements can be done with or without the gloss. The second output of the sphere can be used as an online reference if you use an two channel spectrometer for eliminating drifts of the lamp.

Color measurement (d/8-measurement with the integrating sphere)
Illumination: Halogene light source with 2858K
Hole in the sphere:Diameter 10 mm
Diameter of measuring area: appr. 3mm
Dimensions: appr. 60 x 60 x 100mm

Measuring of bigger spots
f you have to measure larger areas you can use spezial measuring heads like the SentroHead. The sample will be illuminated perpendicular directly by the integrated tungsten halogene light source. The detection of the reflected light from the area of 30mm diameter on the sample will be done by seven circular arranged fibers with an angle of 25°.

Measurement of transparent samples
sample holder can be used to measure color of transparend media like foils, coated material or glas filters with plane surfaces. A collimated beam is used to transmit the sample perpendicular. After transmittance the beam is focused back into another fiber. For big transparent samples or transparent glasses with big thickness a special probe looking like a fork can be used. The measurement principal is the same as described above.
Measuring non plane objects like coated lenses or stray glasses for traffic lights etc. this kind of probes will not work. With this the use of the 0°/diffus- geometry is necessary. The detailed configuration depends on the special application very much. The principle is that a collimated light beam transmits through the sample and will be detected by a integrating sphere to measure the transmitted light as the scattered one also.

Measurement of very little spot size with the 45°/0°-reflection measuring head
A miniaturized measuring head with fiber optical connectors is available for the measuring of spots of very small diameter. It is suitable for measurement at homogene objects.
